About Addiction

About Addiction

Addiction is now the biggest preventable killer in Britain, causing at least around 150,000 deaths a year (1,700 related to drug addiction, 33,000 related to alcohol addiction and 120,000 related to tobacco addiction).

Chinese Medicine View

Addiction and Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine (Chinese herbal medicines and acupuncture) has been shown to help addiction treatments – including drug addiction and alcohol addiction – and also help during a course of addiction rehabilitation.

Smoking has a detrimental impact on all major systems of the human body, in particular, the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. In Chinese medicine, smoking weakens the lung's function of commanding the overall movement of Qi (body's essential energy) and blood in the meridians (the channels through which Qi circulates). This is caused by the accumulation of heat in the lungs and stomach, which in turn causes fire in the heart and/or stagnation of liver Qi (liver's own essential energy). Hence withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, palpitations, mood swings and restlessness occur.
Alcohol addiction, like tobacco addiction and drug addiction, can cause irreversible damage to all the major organs in the human body (although a moderate amount of alcohol under certain circumstances can be beneficial for health). Chinese Medicine has been shown to treat the withdrawal symptoms caused by addictions and reduce the cravings.

Chinese Medicine and acupuncture treatment for drug addiction, alcohol addiction and tobacco addiction have no side effects.

Treatment Options

Addiction Treatment and Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Chinese Medicine has been shown to reduce the craving for cigarettes. Studies show that patients after treatment often report a dislike for the smell of tobacco and that the craving stops when they press ear points with herbal seeds on (this is called ear acupuncture where either herbal seeds or metal studs are plastered on to certain points on the ears).

Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate detoxification, promote a heightened sense of relaxation, and encourage endorphin production, which makes it an excellent tool for overcoming addiction. Chinese herbal medicine helps the body to cope with stress, improves circulation and promotes mental and physical alertness.

The length of treatment depends on the patient's response and on the severity and duration of the addiction. Drug addiction has also been shown to benefit from Chinese medical treatment.

Treatment for addiction can be effective only if the patient is determined to change.

Please note that although we are confident that our treatments will help the majority of our patients, we cannot absolutely guarantee a cure for addiction as the needs and difficulties of each patient can differ greatly.

Case History

The patient spent six months of his life struggling with one of the harshest addictions imaginable - heroin addiction. He was studying at London University at the time and ran up enormous debts, all the time thinking that he had his situation under control. It was after becoming extremely ill while being unable to get any heroin for three days that he walked into the AcuMedic Centre.

This was the first time that he could freely admit his heroin addiction, and after four months of continued treatment, and the support of doctors and staff at AcuMedic, the power of the drug diminished and was eventually brought to a manageable level.
