About Back Pain

Back Pain is the most common orthopaedic complaint and a symptom affecting 80% of the western population at some stage in their lives. In Britain, it accounts for 11.5 million lost working days per year.

Western Medicine View

The causes of back pain according to western medicine include muscle spasms, prolapse of lumbar discs, infection, arthritis and occasionally more sinister disorders such as aortic aneurysm and pancreatic cancer.

Chinese Medicine View

According to Chinese Medicine, there are three main causes of back pain:
(1) Sprain - Inability to straighten, bend or turn without pain. Acute pain may be felt in certain parts of the back, accompanied by swelling.
(2) Spasm or inflammation - Often occurs due to invasion of damp or cold influences. This is reflected as a feeling of heaviness in the back with a difficulty of movement.
(3) Weakness of kidney Qi - Gives rise to an aching feeling, rather than pain. Chinese Medicine regards the lower back as the cabin of the kidney system. Any activities that weaken the kidney (e.g. unrestricted sexual activity) will cause lower back discomfort.

Treatment Options

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. The doctor will determine the cause of your back pain, and recommend a course of treatment. Usually, acupuncture is used for pain relief. Treatment may also involve moxibustion (the use of dried herbs burnt close to the skin) and Chinese herbs for patients whose system has been unbalanced by the pain and suffer from weakened Kidney Qi. Chinese massage can also be highly effective in easing back pain.

Case History

"I attended the Acumedic centre because I have a chronic back problem. I was treated with acupuncture and herbs mainly, and had a one off treatment of deep tissue massage. My back condition has improved and I have less stiffness in my back and other joints. I was quite impressed with how well I sleep and how my enery levels have improved (I'm 60) and was beginning to accept my general tiredness/aches and pains etc as part of growing old. Acumedic has taught me that there is a treatment, outside orthodox medicine that can improve quality of life."
