Hypertension (high blood pressure) itself is not a disease and people with hypertension often show no symptoms. However, blood pressure is the most important determinant of life expectancy and hypertension can lead to heart failure, kidney failure, a stroke and other serious conditions with fatal consequences if not treated properly.
In China, high blood pressure is referred to as internal wind. Low blood pressure on the other hand is regarded as a deficiency of Qi in the blood and the heart. Both conditions can be successfully treated using Chinese herbs, which are very good at controlling blood pressure. We would normally advise patients to see their GP first in order to clarify the diagnosis. Those who have already been investigated should bring the results of the investigations, e.g., reports of kidney function tests and a list of medication they have been taking. Since hypertension often requires life long medication even with supportive Chinese medicine treatment, we would always advise a patient wishing to stop or reduce their medication to consult their GPs or consultants before they do so.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Patients are given a herbal prescription which they need to boil and drink twice a day. In the case of high blood pressure, herbs would be given to treat the liver Yin and blood thus calming the wind. At the same time, the herbs can also improve the general wellbeing of the patient, reducing the ganhuo (fire of the liver) or feeling of anger and irritability which often accompany hypertension.
In addition, one should take measures in making dietary and lifestyle changes because many factors such as high salt or alcohol intake and obesity can aggravate hypertension while exercise can be effective in reducing it.
